Built in 1949 as the
Desert Club of Borrego Springs, the
sleek modernist lines of this
approximately 7, 000 square foot
building embody the dreams that A.A
Burnand and a group of developers had
for creating an ideal desert community
in the heart of the Anza Borrego Desert
State park. Situated on the most
desirable pieces of real estate in the
Borrego Valley and with commanding views
of pristine desert and surrounding
mountains the club was to be the center
of the town' s social and recreational
life.
At its gala opening on February
17, 1950 film stars of the day, backers
and guests from across Southern
California gathered in the over 2,000
sq. ft. glass enclosed great room. With
sweeping views in all directions, a
sunken circular cocktail bar and a cameo
shaped swimming pool, 85 feet in length,
the design of the Desert Club spoke of
the optimism and elegance of post World
War II America. In the mid 1960' s the
Desert Club was sold. Known locally as
the Galleria the building functioned as
an art gallery and residence until 2004.
This mid-century architectural gem was
the premier building in Borrego and has
been painstakingly restored to its
original condition. |
